Saint Dimitrios Church - Agios Dimitrios
The church of the patron saint of the town is a must see in Thessaloniki. The first church of Saint Dimitrios, who is a Christian martyr and related was built in 413 A.D. The location of the church is the place where gladiator fights used to be performed in the city. The ancient bath area, in which Saint Dimitrios had been prisoned has been retained as a crypt inside the church. It was completely rebuilt in 1948 according the original plans since it has been destroyed twice before by fire .It stands as one of the most important byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki.
